Correction of Pigmentation

At Isis we utilize signature combinations of products and procedures to safely remove blemishes, scars and marks on the face and body of men and women of all skin tones. It is critical that this type of treatment is undertaken in skilled hands, as there are many concerns that must be addressed to avoid unwanted consequences. This is true for people of all complexions, but particularly in people of color, as the presence of melanin in the skin can lead to a worsening of the condition if not handled properly. At Isis we have become a trusted resource for the safe and effective treatment of a variety of skin issues for people of all tones due to our expertise in treating skin of color.

Concerns:Pigmentation changes from any cause, including: sun exposure, ingrown hairs and irritation from hair removal methods, acne and acne scars, old chicken pox, scratching or picking the skin, surgical or other traumatic scarring, and hormonal changes such as melasma.

First, we assess the extent and the depth of the pigmentation, as well as the underlying cause(s). If possible, we will recommend ways to eliminate the underlying cause. Sun exposure can be the cause of uneven pigmentation and dark marks. However, even if it is not, any type of hyperpigmentation can be worsened by further sun exposure, as the dark areas tend to darken more quickly than the surrounding areas. Therefore we will always recommend non-toxic, effective sun protection in conjunction with the products or treatments we prescribe. Another common treatable underlying cause of hyperpigmentation on the face, particularly in people of color, is ingrown hairs and irritation from shaving and other hair removal methods. If this is the cause of your hyperpigmentation, we will recommend removing the hair if possible, with Laser Hair Removal. Often times, simply removing the hair will lead to removal of the inflammation and a clearing of the skin.

At Isis, an MD-operated facility, we have access to the most potent products and effective procedures available to safely treat skin of all tones. At many other centers and dermatology offices, you will find that the only treatment that is recommended for hyperpigmentation is hydroquinone, or bleaching cream. At Isis, bleaching agents are almost never first-line therapy because in the long run, they may lead to more blotchy skin. Instead, we use a combination of procducts and procedures that break up and lift pigmentation, while helping the skin repair itself. For example, we often use natural lightening products, usually in combination with retinols, as well as state-of-the art treatments with chemical peels, Genesis Skin Rejuvenation, or both. Which products and treatments, how many of them are needed, and how long the process will take varies greatly depending on your specific issues. The only way to get an accurate treatment plan is to come in for a free consultation.
